a structure carrying memory, Carved from old-growth Jarrah wood salvaged from a property in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria. the wood bears the marks of its former life. Subtle remnants of paint still cling to the surface, softened by time and weather, allowing traces of the past to coexist with its new form. these remnants become part of the story of the tree and of the spaces its lived with, evidence of transition, reuse, and renewal.

The lantern’s construction is architectural in spirit. Its proportions are grounded and deliberate, with joinery influenced by traditional Japanese woodworking, layered, interlocking, with wood holding wood. The frame reads like the small dwelling, the home where the Jarrah wood was salvaged, structure of posts and beams, working together in balance. At 40 cm high and 30 cm wide, it holds presence without heaviness, feeling both substantial and contemplative.

Inside, the mulberry paper diffuser softens the light, transforming flame or bulb into a warm, breathing glow. It functions equally well as a candle lantern or as a vessel for electric light, depending on how it’s inhabited. Carved ornamental hooks integrated into the sides allow the piece to be hung or suspended, giving it an almost floating quality when lifted from the ground.

Overall, the lantern embodies continuity—old world material, new purpose. It doesn’t feel newly made so much as newly arrived.

Alongside this singular work, Relic.Form offers made-to-order pieces informed by the same philosophy. No two pieces are identical. Commissioned works are interpretations, not reproductions. Sharing intent, not exact form. Instead invited into a collaboration, where material, function, and context guide the final outcome.
